Teens take on incredible challenge in aid of Alder Hey

14-year-old James Jewell has completed an incredible feat — running the entire 22-mile Coniston to Barrow challenge to raise funds for Alder Hey Children’s Charity.
James, joined by a group of friends, undertook the challenge not just for fitness or fun, but to give back to the hospital that saved his life. James underwent open heart surgery at Alder Hey when he was just a newborn. Since then, he’s continued to receive ongoing care and support through outreach cardiology clinics, allowing for regular check-ups close to home. Thanks to the first-class care he’s received, James has grown into a healthy, active teenager who loves sport — and now, endurance running.
“Alder Hey have provided continued care, help and advice to James since his surgery almost 15 years ago,” said his mum, Rachel. “Their outreach clinics mean James can easily attend routine appointments and continue making fantastic progress. Because of the outstanding care, he’s able to be physically active and do the things he loves.”
The Coniston to Barrow event was more than a physical challenge — it was a statement. James and his friends trained together and supported one another throughout, motivated by the chance to raise money and awareness for a cause close to their hearts.
“James knows there are other families whose children are going through the same experiences he did,” Rachel added. “He wanted to show them that life after heart surgery can be active, fulfilling, and full of opportunities.”
So far, the group has raised nearly £2,000, with funds going directly to support Alder Hey’s life-changing work for children and families across the UK.
This inspiring achievement is a testament to James’ determination, the power of friendship, and the vital impact of high-quality pediatric care. From everyone at Alder Hey — thank you to James and all his friends!
