How Trustee’s make a difference at a charity: Sarah’s Story

Each year, Trustee’s Week shines a light on the people who give their time, skills and dedication to help charities across the UK thrive. Trustees play a vital role in shaping a charity’s direction, ensuring good governance, and keeping the mission at the heart of every decision.
At Alder Hey Children’s Charity, our trustees are an essential part of everything we do. They bring their expertise, energy and compassion to help us make a lasting difference for the children, young people and families who rely on Alder Hey.
One of our dedicated trustees, Sarah Robinson, joined the Board in January 2019, inspired by a deeply personal connection to the hospital.
“My son Max was born with bi-lateral talipes and cared for by Alder Hey’s Orthopaedic team,” Sarah explains. “He underwent ten operations and years of treatment. We’ll be forever grateful for the outstanding care he received every step of the way.”
That gratitude inspired Sarah to give something back to the hospital that had done so much for her family. Becoming a trustee offered the perfect opportunity to do just that, helping to shape the charity’s impact and support the hospital in continuing its life-changing work.
“What I enjoy most about being a trustee is seeing the positive impact of our work, knowing that the funds we raise directly improve care, create magic and support children’s health and wellbeing across the region and beyond.”
For Sarah, trusteeship has been both personally rewarding and professionally enriching. It’s given her the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to a cause close to her heart, while also developing new skills and perspectives. She said: “It’s been a privilege to see the difference our decisions make for families like ours,” Sarah says. “Professionally, I’ve developed a stronger understanding of governance and strategy, which has helped me grow and strengthened my ability to make strategic decisions.”
When asked what advice she would give to anyone considering becoming a trustee, Sarah doesn’t hesitate to share her advice: “Do it. You’ll make a difference, meet passionate and inspiring people, and be part of something truly special. It’s a privilege and an honour.”
As we celebrate Trustee’s Week, we want to say a heartfelt thank you to Sarah, and to all our trustees, for the vital role they play in helping Alder Hey Children’s Charity make a lasting impact for children and families.
Together, their leadership and commitment ensure we can continue to create brighter futures, improve care, and make Alder Hey a truly extraordinary place for every child who comes through its doors.
