Superstar Nia runs London Marathon for Alder Hey!
Nia Smith ran the London Marathon last week in support of Alder Hey Children’s Charity, and in memory of her cousin Daisy, who was cared for at Alder Hey. Daisy was diagnosed with leukaemia in July 2022, and Alder Hey became her home for several months at a time before she sadly lost her battle in December 2023 at the age of 13.
Speaking on what inspired her to take on the challenge of running the London Marathon, Nia told us: “The care that Daisy and our family received during her treatment is something that can never be repaid, but I wanted to do something to help Alder Hey continue to support other families.” I love watching the London Marathon every year but something inside me last year said: ‘if you ever want to do it, it’s got to be next year’.
I truly believe that it was fate I decided to sign up last year, so that I could carry Daisy’s memory with me. The marathon itself was simply phenomenal – it’s hard to put into words how it felt to take part. The time just went by so quickly! The crowds are such a support the whole way and I couldn’t hold back the tears as I crossed the finish line. Daisy loved football – she was a Wrexham FC season ticket holder and she didn’t miss a match, watching every game throughout her treatment and time in hospital. I carried a Wrexham FC flag with me on the day – flying it high over the finish line, for Daisy.”
Thanks to Nia’s incredible commitment, she has raised a remarkable £3060 so far, with her workplace pledging to match £500, taking her total to at least £3560. This generosity will make such a difference across Alder Hey and allow us to keep creating brighter futures for our brave patients and families. Everyone at the charity sends a huge congratulations to Nia and thank you to everyone who donated to her fundraising page – we couldn’t do what we do without support like this!
