Fundraiser of the Month: Sophie takes on the March 50K!
Our bumper edition of the March Fundraiser of the Month concludes this week as we congratulate Sophie Hazelaar, who completed the March 50K Challenge to help support our MediCinema campaign and bring lasting memories to families across the hospital.
Sophie was inspired to support Alder Hey Children’s Charity to make a difference in memory of her brother, Paul, who was cared for at the hospital before he sadly passed away from a Wilms tumour at age five in 1993. Sophie’s own daughter has also spent time in Alder Hey after being admitted last year to have a benign tumour removed, and she and her family wanted to make a difference for other families at Alder Hey like theirs.
Sophie said: “My parents and family have always spoken so highly about Alder Hey and the amazing staff there. They made this impossible time easier for my family, who are eternally grateful for the support and care Paul received. I myself was also so impressed by the level of care that my daughter received and how easy the staff made the process for us all. I completed the 50km by squeezing in walks into my evening, and finally finished the 50km in Disneyland Paris. Disneyland was Paul’s original Make a Wish, but he had been too poorly to go, so to finish the challenge there was extra special. As I watched the fireworks in the evening, I knew a part of him was watching with us.”
Thank you so much to Sophie and everyone who supported her fundraising for the March 50K Challenge to make a difference for the 450,000 children and young people that we care for every year at Alder Hey, this support will make such a difference to their experience in hospital. Well done Sophie – you’re a real superstar!
