MediCinema Marks One Year Anniversary at Alder Hey

November marked one year since we opened the doors to our very own MediCinema at Alder Hey, a place where children, young people and families can forget the stresses of hospital life and enjoy a moment of pure joy together. What began as a simple idea to bring a little magic into the hospital has grown into a special space that means so much to the Alder Hey community.
Since opening, MediCinema has become a much-loved part of the Alder Hey experience. From the excitement of new blockbuster films to colourful themed events and creative activities, it has given our patients something bright to look forward to during even the toughest days. Families tell us how stepping inside the MediCinema feels like stepping out of hospital for a little while thanks to the dedication of the MediCinema team, along with the wonderful volunteers and nursing staff.
Fiona Ashcroft, CEO of Alder Hey Children’s Charity, said: “The MediCinema has become a cherished part of our Alder Hey community. It offers families an opportunity to step away from the clinical environment and share precious moments together. We are immensely proud of what has been achieved in its first year, and deeply thankful to our supporters, partners and volunteers who ensure this special experience is possible.”
Over the past year, thousands of children, young people and their family members have enjoyed the chance to relax together away from the ward. We’ve been able to offer tailored screenings for clinical and support groups, helping young people with shared experiences come together in a safe and supportive environment. For those who need a quieter or more personalised visit, bespoke private screenings have ensured that every child has the opportunity to experience the magic of film in a way that supports them and their needs. With room for hospital beds, wheelchairs and medical equipment, the MediCinema is designed to be accessible to all.
Hospital stays can be overwhelming, especially for children and their families. The cinema offers more than distraction; it provides a sense of normality, emotional respite and moments of joy that can be deeply meaningful during uncertain times. We hear time and again how a single film has lifted spirits, eased anxiety or created a lasting, treasured memory in the middle of challenging days.
The MediCinema at Alder Hey is proudly delivered in partnership between MediCinema, Alder Hey Children’s Charity and Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, ensuring that every screening is free for children and their families. As we celebrate a wonderful first year, we’re excited for all the stories, smiles and movie magic still to come. Above all, we’re incredibly grateful to everyone who supports Alder Hey, your kindness helps create moments of joy that stay with families long after the credits roll.
