Local family complete a ‘roarsome’ fundraising event in aid of Alder Hey
Its that time of the month when we celebrate another fantastic fundraiser whose support of our charity has gone above and beyond to make a difference at Alder Hey. This months Fundraiser of the Month is Laura Charman, who along with her family, took part in our record-breaking Oli’s Safari Walk on the 12th of May, raising an astonishing £3839 in the process!
Laura decided to join in the event and raise vital funds for Alder Hey to thank the hospital for the care that her son Jasper has and continues to receive from the hospital. Jasper was born with cystic fibrosis, a genetic condition which means he will require lifelong treatment and hospital appointments. At three days old, Jasper had emergency surgery to remove an obstruction from his bowel. This included having a section of his bowel removed and a stoma constructed. Jasper has since had a second surgery to reverse his stoma and takes medication multiple times a day, including enzymes before eating and regular antibiotics.
During his time at Alder Hey, Jasper spent the first months of his life being cared for on the Neonatal Surgical Care Unit, and continues to visit Alder Hey regularly for appointments, treatments, and annual investigations. Laura remarked that: “We can’t thank the staff at Alder Hey enough for the care and support they gave and continue to give to us as a family. We will always be grateful for having this incredible children’s hospital here in the Northwest.”
Laura and her family took on Oli’s Safari Walk to help make a difference for more families like theirs and Alder Hey, with Jasper taking on his first fundraising challenge alongside his mum and dad, enjoying the 3km stroll around Knowsley Safari Park and seeing so many exciting animals! After signing up for the event, Laura set a target of raising £100, but has raised over 38x that initial target, and is not stopping her fundraising journey yet.
Laura and her partner Kevin are taking part in this month’s Step into Summer: June 100km Challenge, hoping to raise more crucial funds to support children and young people at Alder Hey. Everyone at Alder Hey Children’s Charity would like to send our warmest congratulations to Laura for being named Fundraiser of the Month and wish her the best of luck in this month’s challenge – what a superstar!
