Ambassador Iris completes first fundraising challenge!
On Sunday, 7-year-old Iris Weaver completed her first challenge as an Alder Hey Children’s Charity fundraising ambassador: an incredible 11-mile bike ride along the Wirral Way, raising over £1000 for Alder Hey!
Iris took on the challenge in memory of her sister Georgie, who sadly passed away when she was five days old, after being cared for at Alder Hey. Since then, Georgie and Iris’ elder sister Jess has been taking on regular fundraising challenges for our charity, raising thousands of pounds for Alder Hey in the last ten years.
Earlier this year, inspired by her sister’s fundraising, Iris decided she wanted to help make a difference at Alder Hey too, becoming an Alder Hey fundraising ambassador like her sister and setting her sights on the Wirral Way bike ride, a challenge that Jess has taken on many times over the years.
On Sunday, after weeks of training on her Pashley Robin tricycle, Iris set off on what would have been Georgie’s tenth birthday to take on the 11-mile Wirral Way cycle path from Hooton to West Kirby. The bank holiday weather brought with it challenging patches of wind and rain, but Iris took it all on her stride, completing the challenge in just over three hours, and enjoying a well-deserved ice cream to celebrate!
Emma, Iris’ mum told us: “The weather certainly was mixed on Sunday though thankfully Iris didn’t get too wet. She did so well with the ride, there was lots of mud and a couple of sections of the Wirral Way were hard to ride through. Jess was amazing in motivating Iris and keeping her going when her legs started to hurt. She is super proud of herself!”
Congratulations Iris, on such an incredible first fundraising challenge for Alder Hey. The vital funds that you have raised will make a difference for so many children and young people at the hospital. We cannot wait for the next fundraising challenge from the Majesstic Fundraisers!
