Fundraiser of the Month

Haigh family race to victory as September’s Fundraisers of the Month!
The summer may be over, and the school year may now be back in session, but that doesn’t mean our wonderful fundraisers aren’t still doing all sorts of wonderful things to support Alder Hey!
Our Fundraiser(s) of the Month for September were the Haigh family from Morecambe, who in a completely unique form of fundraising, built and raced their own soap box car at an event in Lancaster, all to support the work we do at Alder Hey Charity!
Mum, Michelle, told us: “My 17-year-old daughter Phebe had spinal fusion surgery in January performed by Mr Munigangaiah. Phebe wanted to say thank you somehow for giving her the best possible chance in life, and so as a car mad family, once we saw this event advertised, we knew we had to enter.”
The whole family got involved at trying their hand as engineers by building their own Alder Hey branded soap box, with Phebe’s older brother volunteering to go down the track, and in a performance that Lewis Hamilton would be proud of, he finished in a remarkable place second on the podium!

By fundraising for Alder Hey during the build up to the event on the 17th September, the family have raised over £1000 for the charity, and don’t plan on stopping there, with Michelle telling us: “The team are looking for more races so fundraising will continue!”
Since her procedure in January, Phebe has gone from strength to strength, as she has finished college, started a full-time apprenticeship and passed her driving test all before her 18th birthday – how amazing! Keep up the good work Phebe!
Thank you to Phebe, Michelle and all the Haigh family and friends who got stuck in and worked together to make something wonderful and raise vital funds for all our patients in the process, we couldn’t do what we do without your support!
