Local teen completes virtual cycle challenge in aid of Alder Hey!

In a month where we have seen so many incredible fundraising challenges, it was difficult to choose just one fundraiser to receive June’s Fundraiser of the Month award, but this month’s winner Charlie Coventry is definitely deserving of the mantle!
14-year-old Charlie took on a virtual bike ride, after being inspired by last month’s London to Amsterdam cycle challenge. In just thirty days, Charlie, along with his stepdad Dan, cycled 355 miles, the same distance between London to Amsterdam, and raised a remarkable £1377 in the process. Charlie even managed to complete the last twenty miles as a solo ride and was very proud of his achievement in aid of Alder Hey.
Charlie told us: “My connection to Alder Hey is that they looked after my Auntie Em when she had Leukaemia. I wanted to raise money for Alder Hey because they are amazing people and so they can help more people like her. She was treated at Alder Hey for eight years for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia, before passing away in 2018. I was born after her diagnosis and pretty much grew up in and around the hospital, even my first Christmas was spent in the oncology unit visiting Emily where my mum says the staff made it as wonderful as they could!
I found it tiring but worth it. I’m a lot more confident on my bike now and did my first solo twenty-mile ride. My favourite bit of the ride was getting to do it with my stepdad Dan and raising so much money! Though I’m glad it’s over because after all the miles my bum hurts!”
Thank you so much to Charlie and Dan for taking on this incredible challenge in aid of our charity. Your commitment and generosity will make such a difference to all the children and young people at Alder Hey. Congratulations Charlie – our well deserved Fundraiser of the Month!
