At some point we’ve all run 5K through an airport – sprinting through duty free, dashing to your gate, 5 minutes ‘til departure! Well, here’s a unique opportunity to do so on the runway! This November, our partners at Liverpool John Lennon Airport are generously opening up their runway to the public for a 5K run in support of Alder Hey Children’s Charity.
An exciting first for both Alder Hey Children’s Charity and Liverpool John Lennon Airport, the 5km run will give participants a chance to run the length of the runway at night, with the runway lights guiding their path! Taking place in the slightly quieter early hours of the morning, participants will be complete their 5k in between planes using the runway for take-off and landing. Excitingly, the event will also have some amazing prizes up for grabs for our highest fundraisers and fastest male and female runners, including flights donated by our main sponsors easyJet and easyJet holiday and event tickets donated by the M&S Arena.
Please be aware the run takes place in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Event Timings: Registration for the event opens on Friday 21st November at 11:45pm, with the run starting at 2:00am on Saturday Morning.

Registration: Registration for the event will take place at Speke Hall, The Walk, Speke, Liverpool, L24 1XD. There will be free parking available here.

Can I get a refund if I can't participate in the event?
No, once your entry is accepted, refunds, deferments, or entry transfers are not possible, regardless of changes in personal circumstances. This includes injury or any other medical condition arising once your entry is accepted. A refund is only possible in the case that the date of the event is changed by Liverpool John Lennon Airport.
What happens if I get injured or have a medical condition before the event?
Unfortunately, injury or medical conditions arising after your entry is accepted cannot be considered for refunds or deferments.
What do I need to bring on the day of the event?
You must bring a valid photographic ID (driving licence or passport) to participate in the event. This must be the same ID you have used when you registered to take part.
Is there an age requirement to participate?
Yes, you must be 17 years or older on the day of the event (22/11/2025).
Do I need to raise sponsorship money to take part?
Yes, you must raise a minimum of £100 in sponsorship to be eligible to participate in the run. 80% of this needs to be raised before the event, the remaining 20% can be paid within 1 week of taking part. In the case where this condition isn’t met you may be asked to make up the shortfall. For further information on your fundraising please contact the Alder Hey team on corporate@alderhey.nhs.uk.
Winners of our highest fundraiser prizes will be announced one week post event and contacted via email.
Must I have an ID to take part?
Yes, every participant must have a valid in date ID to take part in the event. A passport or driving licence will be accepted but a driving licence where possible is preferred. This ID must be brought with you and remain with you throughout the event.
Are there any accessibility accommodations?
We are committed to inclusivity and strive to make our events welcoming to all. However, due to the natural terrain and current course conditions, the 5K route is not fully accessible for wheelchair users or individuals with certain mobility requirements. We understand the importance of accessibility and are actively exploring ways to improve this for future events. What safety measures are in place?
You must follow all instructions given by the event team before, during, and after the run. You will be provided with a visitor pass that must be worn throughout the event.
Can spectators come to watch the event?
Due to the event taking place in an Airside operational area, no spectators are permitted.
Will there be parking available?
Yes, event parking will be provided free of charge for all participants at Speke Hall (L24 1XD).
Is smoking allowed at the event?
No, smoking, including electronic cigarettes, is not permitted on the Airport site at any time.
What personal belongings can I bring?
You will be provided a bag to place all your belongings in whilst taking part in the run. Belongings such as ear buds and cameras are not permitted on the airfield during the race. The only exception is smart watches and smart phones.
Can I take photographs during the event?
Yes, you are allowed to take photos during the event! We will also have an event photographer on site and will be able to share photos with participants following the event.
What happens if I leave my belongings unattended?
Any belongings left unattended are at your own risk. Liverpool John Lennon Airport is not liable for any lost or damaged belongings.
When do I need to arrive for?
You must arrive at Speke Hall (L24 1XD) for registration between 11:45pm (Friday 21st November) – 12:45am (Saturday 22nd November) and be checked-in by 1:00am. Any participants not checked in by 1:00am will not be able to take part in the event.
What if the event is cancelled due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances?
The run may be cancelled at short notice due to poor weather conditions, aircraft diversions, delayed inbound aircraft, or other events beyond Liverpool John Lennon Airport’s control. While efforts will be made to provide notice, Liverpool John Lennon Airport will not be liable for such cancellations.
What is the cut off time to complete the 5k run?
Runners must complete the 5k course within one hour. After the run, runners will be invited to have a hot drink before boarding the bus back to the car park. The final bus will depart at 3:30am.
Is water provided on the course?
Water will not be provided on the course however there will be water and hot drinks provided once runners have completed the course.
When is the deadline to enter the event?
Entries will close on Friday 31st October 2025.
How do I set up a fundraising page?
In your welcome email, you will be sent a fundraising guide from Alder Hey Children’s Charity which will give you details on how to set up your JustGiving page or make a donation direct to the charity.
