Romily

Romily was diagnosed at Alder Hey with hip dysplasia, a condition in which the hip socket is too shallow to properly support the top of the thigh bone, leading to instability and dislocation.
When Romily was four years old, concerns about her mobility first began to emerge. She was referred to Alder Hey, where an X-ray revealed the cause: hip dysplasia, a condition in which the hip socket is too shallow to properly support the top of the thigh bone, leading to instability and dislocation.

Further investigations showed that her hip joint was severely affected and that she would require major reconstructive surgery. Her family were cared for by an exceptional team, led by consultant orthopaedic surgeon Mr Christopher Talbot.

The operation was a success, but recovery was long and challenging. Romily had intensive physiotherapy with the team at Alder Hey to relearn how to walk. Initially relying on a wheelchair, she gradually rebuilt her strength and confidence.

Throughout her treatment and recovery, her family were struck by the kindness shown by everyone at Alder Hey. From consultants and nurses to cleaners and catering staff, they remember the care, compassion and support they received at every stage of the journey.

“From day one our journey with Alder Hey has been amazing, really personable from the people who used to bring our breakfast in the morning to our consultant, we’ve had such a caring and compassionate journey.” Carly, Romily’s mum

Determined not to let her condition define her, Romily returned to gymnastics and cheerleading as soon as she could. Her hard work and resilience eventually led her to compete on the world stage, including an unforgettable trip to Florida for the Cheerleading World Championships.

Through cheerleading, Romily became besties with her fellow Matalan campaign star Harriet, and the pair have now been best friends for four years. Together, they have supported one another through challenges, achievements and unforgettable experiences.
