Meet the Stars
Meet Rivan
Rivan became critically ill after developing pneumonia, a collapsed lung and an empyema, which is a serious infection around the lung. As his condition worsened, he was transferred to Alder Hey by blue-light ambulance, where he underwent emergency surgery and spent time in the High Dependency Unit.
It was an incredibly frightening time for the whole family, but Rivan gradually began to recover under the care of the Alder Hey team and was able to return home in time for Christmas. Today, he is thriving and a happy, healthy little boy enjoying life with his sisters.

Meet Millie
Millie was diagnosed with a complex heart condition before she was born. At just two weeks old, she underwent her first open-heart surgery at Alder Hey and has since had three more operations, including one particularly high-risk procedure due to the unusual position of her heart. For a time, Alder Hey became a second home to Millie and her family. Through incredibly difficult moments, the cardiac team supported them with expert care, compassion and reassurance.
Millie is now home with her family, having recently celebrated her first birthday and getting stronger every day, bringing plenty of smiles to her three older siblings.
“We just feel so grateful and humbled to have Millie but also the experience within Alder Hey. It’s opened our eyes up to a lot, we’re just amazed and thankful.”

Meet Harriet
Harriet has been cared for by Alder Hey since she was a baby and was later diagnosed with Behçet’s Syndrome, a rare inflammatory condition that can cause significant pain and problems with the joints. At times, Harriet’s condition has left her unable to walk and needing crutches, but Alder Hey’s rheumatology, physiotherapy and psychology teams have worked closely with her family to help her manage her condition and keep doing what she loves.
Today, with ongoing treatment, Harriet is doing really well and continues to dance and cheer alongside her best friend, Romily.

Meet Romily
Romily was four when her school noticed she was falling frequently and walking differently. After being referred to Alder Hey, she was diagnosed with severe hip dysplasia and needed major reconstructive surgery.
Her recovery was a huge challenge. Romily spent two months unable to get out of bed before beginning physiotherapy and learning to walk again.
With the support of her Alder Hey team, she returned to the gymnastics and cheerleading she loved and has since gone on to compete internationally, including at the Cheerleading World Championships in Florida.

Why the PJs Matter
Every product purchased makes a real difference, with 100% of all profits going directly to Alder Hey Children’s Charity, helping to support the amazing work of Alder Hey Children’s Hospital – one of the largest and busiest children’s hospitals in Europe.
Together, we’ve helped fund vital initiatives, including the creation of Alder Hey’s pioneering Research, Education and Innovation Centre and major appeals supporting children’s mental health and surgical neonatal care – helping create brighter futures for children and young people.
Over the next two years, funds raised will support pioneering research, early years development and community wellbeing programmes that help tackle health inequalities and improve outcomes for children and families.
Our Partnership with Matalan
The partnership between Matalan and Alder Hey Children’s Charity began over 13 years ago, with the launch of our first product collaboration in 2014. What started as a five-year pledge to support the development of Alder Hey’s Research, Education and Innovation Centre has grown into something truly special.
Since then, our annual PJ collection has become a beloved tradition for families across the UK, with 100% of profits donated to Alder Hey.
Over the years, Matalan has supported key appeals, including our Surgical Neonatal Appeal, with the new unit set to open in 2027. To date, the partnership has raised over £6.1 million, thanks to Matalan’s passionate colleagues, dedicated customers, and the continued success of our much-loved PJ campaign.
