Transforming Lives Through Music
Thanks to funding from the Isle of Man Anti-Cancer Association, we have been able to run regular participatory music workshops on our Oncology Unit.
Led by professional cellist Georgina Aasgaard, we have seen our children and young people take part in music making, song writing, learning to play a wide range of instruments such as keyboard and ukulele and performing alongside Georgina.
Music has also been used to help them de-stress and relax. As a result, we have seen significant improvements to children and young people’s anxiety levels, confidence and resilience, which have helped the whole family when spending long periods of time in hospital.
Empowering our brave young patients at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital
“I got to do something else rather than be on my phone for hours. The way Georgina played the cello was so enchanting and very therapeutic. I had a great time,” – Oncology patient aged 15 years
“It breaks the days up and my daughter learns new skills. She started off shy and got more confident, she gets more confident each time,” – Mum of patient aged 2 years
Part of our project has been the creation of a podcast, produced by Twin Vision, which gives a behind the scenes look at how we run our music programme with patients, the impact on patients, family and staff, and reflections from Georgina on her interactions on the Unit.
