The world's leading 10-mile running event, The Great South Run takes place in Portsmouth and features a fast and flat course on Southsea seafront.

Starting and finishing on Clarence Esplanade in Southsea and with views of Solent, runners follow a route through Portsmouth Historic Dockyard; home to HMS Victory and the Mary Rose Museum. Attracting over 20,000 participants, why not take part in the Great South Run and raise money for Alder Hey? 

The Great South Run is an inclusive event that brings together elite sportsmen and women together with ordinary runners and celebrities. Famous faces who have completed this 10-mile race include Stephen Mangan, Green Wing star Katie Lyons and Emmerdale’s Chris Chittel.

You have to be aged 16 or over take part in this race, however, if you are under 16 you can participate in the Junior and Mini races. Those aged between 9-15-year-old can test their skills in the 2.5k junior run and little ones, who are ages 3-8 can take part in the Mini 1.5k race. Kids are encouraged to dress up in nautical fancy dress.

For those that are not up to running a 10 miler yet, you can take part in the Great South 5k Taking place within Southsea common, the Great South 5k s a flat and friendly race and the perfect introduction to running races. For seasoned runners that prefer running shorter distances, the Great South 5kis the ideal race to aim for that PB.

Great South Run Distance

The Great South Run is organised by the same company as the Great North Run. The 10-mile (16 kilometres) run is one of the biggest running events in the south coast area. Taking in some of Portsmouth and Southsea's most iconic landmarks, the Great South Run will take you past the historic docks, Southsea Common, Southsea Castle and Eastney Esplanade.

Three-time consecutive winner, Chris Thompson, a British long-distance runner, has completed this fast course in 46 minutes and 56 seconds. The fastest time ever recorded was by Kenyan, Joseph Ebuya, who posted a record-breaking time of 45.15. In 2009, Mo Farah won the race posting a time of 46 minutes and 25 seconds.
