Piers Morgan donates to Alder Hey after losing charity bet to Joey Barton

Alder Hey will remarkably become a beneficiary of Brazil's World Cup semi-final exit after Piers Morgan lost a Twitter wager to footballer Joey Barton last night.

Piers had backed the Brazilians to make it to the final in front of their home fans, but footballer Joey felt Germany were the team to beat and the two decided to make things interesting with a £5,000 charity bet.

It didn't take long for Joey to be proved right, with Piers even tweeting "I think #MysticMorgan needs to go on holiday" as the reality began to sink in!

After the final whistle blew on Germany's 7-1 victory, the two sorted out the formalities with Joey Barton's providing a spectacular assist to name Alder Hey Children's Charity as one of his two chosen charities. Piers then replied to say "Done. Good choices."

Clare White, Director of Alder Hey Children's Charity said: “We are delighted that Joey Barton asked for some of this money to go to Alder Hey Children’s Charity and we are incredibly grateful to Piers Morgan for pledging this donation. Every penny of this donation will go towards our £30m appeal, which is aiming to raise money for life-saving equipment, vital research and arts and play activities in our new hospital, Alder Hey in the Park.”

Piers' donation could be used to buy a special bed for the new Alder Hey in the Park, so a parent can stay next to their child overnight.

Will you do something remarkable for Alder Hey too?

We are fundraising to make Alder Hey in the Park a truly world-leading hospital for children and families across the UK. By donating just £2 a month, you'll be doing something remarkable to help us fund life saving medical equipment, research and facilities.
