Raising money for a cause that you support by running for a charity is a great way to give back to your community and help those in need. Charities rely on the donations and support of the community and they really appreciate those who take it upon themselves to raise funds by walking or doing a run for charity.

You don't have to organise your own charity running event to fundraise for the charity of your choice. Many organised charity races, large and small, will let you raise money for any charity you wish. Searching online for charity runs in and around your local area is a great place to start; and, not only will you be raising money for a good cause, but you're also likely to meet new people with shared interests, either while training or at the event itself. Charity Challenge

If you’re thinking about taking up a charity challenge this year to raise money for Alder Hey, and you’re new to running, the best way of getting started is to join your local Park Run, sign up to the Couch to 5k programme or start jogging in your local area. It’s always best to speak to a health professional before starting any new strenuous exercise regime, especially if you have a medical condition which could be affected by running.

If you’re not sure where to start, take a quick jog/power walk around your local park or neighbourhood every few days, then slowly increasing the length of your jog will help to quickly build up your stamina. If you have never run before it is best to sign up for a short race to begin with, such as a 5K or 10K event. Signing up for a charity race, whether it be a 5k charity run, 10k charity run, charity fun run, half marathon or a marathon can be a daunting process; but if you’re determined to raise money and get fit, having a goal to work towards can be a great tool for motivation. Once you’ve committed yourself to taking part in a particular organised walk or run for charity, you can start to think about getting sponsored.

Charity Runs

The main goal of running for charity is to raise awareness and support for a charity of your choice. Sponsorship is one way of raising money for your cause and you can ask family, friends and colleagues to sponsor you to take part in a charity event or run for charity. Generally, there is no minimum or maximum amount of money that can be raised for a charity or cause in a charity run, as every penny will be greatly appreciated; although there may be a sign-up fee that you’ll have to pay to take part, which is worth bearing in mind. There are some charity runs where you may be expected to raise a certain amount of money, so always check the terms and conditions before you commit yourself. 

If you’re taking part in a sponsored run for charity, there are plenty of online resources that you can use to keep track of everyone who has signed up to sponsor you.. In fact, we have a range of online fundraising resources for those who are running or walking to raise money for Alder Hey.
