What gifts in Wills can do…

A gift in your Will – whatever the size – will enable Alder Hey to fund crucial projects that enable us to transform so many young lives forever. Your legacy could have a lasting impact long into the future.

These special gifts are vital to ensuring that children and young people are at the heart of everything we do and the future of medicine in the UK and beyond.

Making your Will and keeping it up to date also ensures that your family, friends and causes that you care about are taken care of. We realise that your loved ones come first, but a gift in your Will to Alder Hey would mean a lasting legacy for children and young people in the North West and across the whole of the UK.

"Every day I'm fortunate to see first-hand the incredible impact of donations, whatever their size. Without crucial support from donors, many of the life-saving facilities and innovations here simply could not be realised. Alder Hey will continue to be here for tomorrow's children and I want to see our children's hospital continue to offer the very best possible environment and facilities, both for those with straightforward conditions and for the very complex.  I hope you'll see how considering Alder Hey in your Will can make a huge difference to the lives of the remarkable children we care for."  Prof. Conor Mallucci, Consultant Paediatric Neurosurgeon

Audrey's Story

During her lifetime, Audrey Griffiths experienced the magic of Alder Hey on two separate occasions.

Her daughter, Elizabeth, was admitted to Alder Hey as a toddler and successfully overcame a health issue. Years later, Madog, the son of a close friend of the family was diagnosed with leukaemia aged 2. Madog, now 7, was successfully treated at Alder Hey and at time of Audrey’s passing in early 2020, he was ‘out of the woods’ and now attends Alder Hey for check-ups twice a year.
It was these experiences that influenced Audrey’s decision to make a wonderful gesture of leaving a gift in her Will to Alder Hey Children’s Charity.

Elizabeth recalls:

“My mother thought carefully about her legacies…She was a remarkable person who is much missed by me and so many others whose lives she touched. She wanted to acknowledge the role played by clinicians in Alder Hey in helping not only our family but also in their support of Madog and his family”

Audrey sadly passed away in February 2020 aged 98. She was a much loved mother and aunty, known for her ramrod posture and immaculate appearance.

Audrey’s impact

Audrey’s kindness is changing the way our young patients learn to communicate.

Last year some donations, including those gifts left in supporters’ Wills, went towards an online communication aid for Speech and Language Therapy patients at Alder Hey.

The programme is providing support for young patients with varying needs and delivers consistency between the help they receive in school and hospital. This has been so important during lockdown and our clinician colleagues are really happy with how this new tool is shaping their work.

John Gordon is one of our Physiotherapists here at Alder Hey, supporting the physical health of young patients with a wide range of conditions. This has enabled the Physio team to access Physitrack, an online prescription tool currently helping over 800 patients at Alder Hey.

John told us how it works and the difference it is making now as well as the long-term benefit:

“We have found that over the years, getting patients engaged with their exercises has been quite a challenge, this is not only the case in Musculoskeletal (MSK) Physiotherapy but Physiotherapy in all areas.  Historically we would either write out the exercises for patients or try and draw their exercises, but we found that patients were coming back having either lost the sheets of paper or not remembering how to complete their exercises. With Physitrack we have been able to send videos of every exercise we need to give patients and monitor their compliance. We now have over 800 patients using Physitrack. Our initial feedback is that patients feel much more engaged with their treatment plans and they are completing their exercises more regularly; this should lead to quicker recovery times and less appointments needed. We are also using the program with our Oncology patients who have reported that they feel more empowered and more confident when completing their exercises as they have a resource that they can follow, and they can also contact us through the program if they have any concerns. During COVID-19 the use of Physitrack has been invaluable in being able to treat all our patients remotely. The funding from Alder Hey Charity will help us continue with this program and help us shape physiotherapy going forward.”

Every gift in every Will can change lives but we recognise this support is more individual than a donation. When you leave a gift in your Will to Alder Hey Children’s Charity we:

• Promise to use your gift wisely
• Realise you might want your gift used in a special way
• Recognise that those closest to you come first
• Understand that you might have to change your mind due to a change in personal circumstances
• Will never put pressure on you to leave a gift in your Will
• Will treat you and your next of kin sensitively and with respect and gratitude

Your gift will be used to fund life-saving medical equipment, research and much more.

If you decide to donate to Alder Hey Children’s Charity through your Will, then you will be making a huge, positive difference to helping Alder Hey Children’s Hospital to continue to do the amazing work that it does, saving the lives of children in the UK.

Every year, Alder Hey cares for 330,000 patients and families who rely on donations to fund life-saving medical equipment and facilities – purchases that your money will go towards. Not only does charity Will writing for Alder Hey enables us to buy equipment and develop our hospital, it also enables us to provide emotional support to our patients and their families to ensure that their time in hospital is as comfortable as possible. As well as brand-new life-changing technology and investment in innovation, the donation that is left in your Will can help us to fund programmes for our patients such as ward musicians and on-site magicians which brighten up a child’s time in our hospital.

A gift in your Will, whatever the size, will go towards improving the lives of children and young people at Alder Hey.

Attendees heard from Professor Conor Mallucci, Senior Paediatric Neurosurgery Consultant, how an intraoperative MRI scanner is delivering the best possible patient experience at Alder Hey. This state-of-the -art piece of equipment, fully funded by the charity, is positively impacting the lives of children and their families from all over the world and has placed Alder Hey as a world leader in the use of this technology for children.
